Genesis 5:1-7:24

It’s fascinating how Genesis 5:1 reminds us that we are created in the image and likeness of God, but Genesis 5:3 reveals that we are also born in the image and likeness of Adam (Romans 5:12). We are all fallen, in this sense, and depraved, we are all part of the “Adam’s Family.”

The Bible doesn’t tell us everything that has taken place in human history, only those things God determines we need to know. Genesis 5 streamlines us through the genealogy of Noah. Along the way we run into this man named Enoch. Enoch walked with God 300 years. He walked with God and “was not, for God took him (Genesis 5:24). Everyone else died, but not Enoch. He was beamed up and is therefore a picture of that generation who will not die, but those who will be raptured up (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17; 1 Corinthians 15:50-51).

Enoch is also mentioned in:

Hebrews 11:5 (NKJV) “By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”

It breaks my heart to read those words in Genesis 6:5-7. Reminds me of today. Evil is everywhere, deeply embedded in the heart of humanity. God in His justice, HAD to judge the world.

It’s important to know that there is a precedent for the rapture, and there is a precedent for worldwide judgment.

Genesis 6:8 (NKJV) “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.”

• That’s the key for you and me, grace (John 1:14, Ephesians 2:8-9)

Noah did according to all that God commanded him.  He built an ark with Godly fear in order to save his family, and in the process warned the world, who no doubt mocked him along the way. Some say it took him 120 years, but others (see Answers in Genesis) say it was probably between 20 and 40 years.

Hebrews 11:7 (NKJV) “By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”

Matthew 3:7-4:11

John the Baptist did not have the “Seeker friendly approach.” He called the hypocrites out, “Brood of Vipers – snakes. You think you’re saved because you follow all the rules and regulations meticulously? Because you’re descendants of Abraham? No way!”

Matthew 3:12 (NKJV) “His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

• John reminded them and us that the evidence of salvation is a changed life, the fruit of the Spirit.

Matthew 3:12 (NKJV) “His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

• John reminded them and us that these are not trivial matters.

Although Jesus had no sin to wash away, He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness, He was baptized to be that example for us, and He was baptized to identify with the ministry of John the Baptist. As His ministry began, He would be anointed by the Holy Spirit, and He would go toe-to-toe with Satan defeating Him with the tools of prayer and fasting, and the Word!

Psalm 3:1-8

What a horrible time that must have been – David was torn as he ran from his son Absalom.  His enemies and trials were increasing, but by faith he not only sang this song, he wrote this song and made that declaration, “But You O LORD are a shield for me, my glory, the One who lifts up my head.” (Psalm 3:3)

Proverbs 1:10-19

Proverbs 1:19 (NKJV) “So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners.”

• Beware of any form of greed or materialism.

  1. Reading about Noah, I had to ask myself, ‘Am I willing to be a Noah in today’s world?”
The Lord asks me to be set apart for Him and His purposes , even though others may mock at my obedience to His Word. It isn’t easy , but by His grace and by faith , I too must continue and BE READY for the return of my Lord Jesus’s return. The Lord in His mercy warned Noah of the coming judgement , and He has warned all of us— Thank You my Lord for You are merciful and ever sooo good!
