Genesis 1:2

Genesis 1:2, “…and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

The Spirit of God is the third Person of the Trinity; the Trinity consisting of one God, in three Persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

There’s much confusion about the Holy Spirit nowadays, as well as heresy. Some heretics deny that the Holy Spirit is even a Person, teaching that the Holy Spirit is just a “force” or an “it.” That’s the furthest thing from the truth. The Holy Spirit is able to be grieved (Ephesians 4:30) and lied to (Acts 5:3-4), and Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as “He” in John 16:7-15 and elsewhere. The Holy Spirit has a heart to make us holy.

In our text for today out of Genesis 1:2, we see the Spirit of God, as an agent of creation, hovering over the face of the waters. As we study the Holy Spirit we also see how He is the agent of the NEW creation – us – as Christians! By the Holy Spirit we are saved, we’re born again (John 3:5-8), and by the Holy Spirit we experience sanctification.

Don’t be discouraged – God lives in you! And as we cooperate with the Holy Spirit and yield ourselves to Him, He will do a wonderful work. They say that the Spirit of God will take the Word of God to conceive a child of God. And the Spirit of God will take the Word of God to conform us into the image of God (make us like Jesus). That’s what I want most.

Until the whole world hears, your brother in Christ,

“Every time we say, ‘I believe in the Holy Spirit,’ we mean that we believe that there is a living God able and willing to enter human personality and change it.” – J.B. Phillips
